Reflection & Development
After a cycle of three summits held in 2003, 2004, and 2005, Ark designated 2006 to 2007 to redefine and redesign the next cycle of summits which will engage new countries. The cycle will involve a global summit that engages as many youth partner organizations as possible for a summit that will be organized around the theme, “Youth Claiming Seats at the Peace Table”.
The United Nations declared the year 2000 as the International Year for a Culture of Peace, and then designated the first decade of the new millenium, 2001-2010, the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children and Youth of the World.
This global summit is in the process of planning and engaging other youth organizations. We’re currently considering a central location in the USA, such as Kansas. The intent will be to give voice to young people as they advocate solutions to the issues that affect the lives of children and youth now and in the future: violence, ware, human rights, HIV/AIDS education, globalization, environment/pollution, diplomatic servant leadership skills, conflict resolution, and the use of peace curriculum in global education. The voice and commitment of youth is curcial and must be heard and taken seriously. They are the leaders who will shape the future. Youth will be selected as Peace Advocate Representatives to take the suggested solutions of concerns to the United Nations Office for Peace and Justice for Children/Youth.
In 2007, ARK IV met and involved seven countries. ARK V is set for June 11-24, 2009. The Global Summit: Youth Claiming Seats at the Peace Table will be held in 2010, a vision in progress. Other youth peace building groups are encouraged to explore with us.
